Liposuction is a surgical procedure to remove excess or unwanted fat. Patients frequently undergo this procedure to reduce fatty bulges and re-contour body areas such as the abdomen, flanks (“love handles”), inner and outer thighs, upper neck, jowls, and knees. Although most patients focus the procedure on a specific area, it is not uncommon to perform this procedure on multiple body areas.
At our practice, liposuction is performed using tumescent anesthesia – a type of local anesthesia that maximizes safety and patient comfort. Therefore, patients do not have the potential serious complications of general anesthesia.
The procedure removes fatty tissue from these locations through a suction tube known as a cannula. After an incisional puncture wound has been made, the cannula is inserted to break up fat cells and remove them. Following the procedure, the incision is sutured for closure.
